Haptic Room Studies

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the opening of the exhibition Haptic Room Studies by artist Adi Hollander at Movement Exposed Gallery Space in Utrecht on 13 April 2024. The installation Haptic Room Study #4 questions the concept of tactile spatialisation and explores the field between hearing and active listening based on A Sound Map of the Housatonic River by composer Annea Lockwood. Haptic Room Study #3 evolves around having a conversation. The Haptic Room Studies will be on show at the gallery until 25 May 2024. 
 
Haptic Room Studies
How the body and senses are inseparable from the experience of sound, and which role the environment plays in this, is the foundation for the artistic questions that Adi Hollander raises since 2015 and materialises in installations that make the visitor actively participate. 
Her ongoing research at the cutting edge of art and technology have led to What do I hear? (2021) and Haptic Room Studies (2022-2024), research projects initiated by Hollander for which she collaborates with artists and scientists. They create haptic environments by embedding technological tools for sensory translation in the architecture of spaces where art is presented, making the works accessible to sensory-diverse audiences. During What do I hear? a series of prototypes was developed. With the Haptic Room Studies these prototypes became embedded in spatial installations.
Haptic Room Study #4 contains an integrated version of A Sound Map of the Housatonic River by Annea Lockwood, comprising of four channels. Hollander chose this piece for its ability to craft an immersive sense of place and time. It weaves a linear narrative, drawing from the concept of traversing (map) along, in, and over the river. 
Haptic Room Study #3 is designed as a space for two people to have a dialogue. 
 
About the artist
Within the works of Adi Hollander visual art, architecture and technology merge. Her objects and sculptures were presented at galleries and museums in The Netherlands and the international arts field. Since 2016 she is also dedicated to the translation of sound, among which the works of contemporary composers, for a hard of hearing, deaf and hearing audience. In her site-specific installations these qualities come together, they are meant as places of exchange which take the form of functional architectonic sculptures. She uses forms and structures that aim to change the perspective of the spectator’s senses and experience, creating an alternate form of knowledge and way of perceiving the world around us.
Adi Hollander is the initiator of The OtherAbilities and was in 2003 co-founder of the artist collective Public Space With a Roof. She holds a Bachelor degree in Sculpture from Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and a Master of Science degree in Art, Culture and Technology from MIT in the United States.

De installatie Haptic Room Study #4 bevraagt het concept van tactiele ruimtelijkheid en tast het gebied tussen horen en actief luisteren af aan de hand van de geluidscompositie A Sound Map of the Housatonic River van Annea Lockwood. Haptic Room Study #3 draait om het voeren van een dialoog. De Haptic Room Studies zijn tot en met 25 mei 2024 te zien in de galerie. 
 
Haptic Room Studies
Hoe het lichaam en de zintuigen onlosmakelijk onderdeel zijn van de beleving van geluid en welke rol de omgeving daarin speelt, ligt ten grondslag aan de artistieke vragen die Adi Hollander sinds 2015 opwerpt en materialiseert in installaties die de bezoeker tot actieve deelname bewegen. 
Haar doorlopende onderzoek op het snijvlak van kunst en technologie mondde uit in What do I hear? (2021) en Haptic Room Studies (2022-2024), door Hollander geïnitieerde onderzoeksprojecten waarin zij samenwerkt met kunstenaars en wetenschappers. Zij creëren tactiele omgevingen door technologische tools voor zintuigelijke beleving in de architectuur van kunstruimten in te bedden, waardoor de installaties toegankelijk zijn voor een sensory-diverse publiek. Tijdens What do I hear? werd een reeks prototypes ontwikkeld. Met de Haptic Room Studies kregen deze prototypes een inbedding in ruimtelijke installaties.
De installatie Haptic Room Study #4 bevat een geïntegreerde versie van de geluidscompositie A Sound Map of the Housatonic River van componist Annea Lockwood, bestaand uit vier geluidskanalen. Hollander koos dit stuk vanwege het vermogen om een gevoel van immersie te creëren: van langs, door en over de rivier bewegen. Haptic Room Study #3 is ontworpen als een ruimte waarin twee personen een dialoog kunnen voeren en voelen. 
 
Over de kunstenaar
In het werk van Adi Hollander komen beeldende kunst, architectuur en technologie samen. Haar objecten en sculpturen werden tentoongesteld in galeries en musea in Nederland en in het internationale kunstenveld. Sinds 2016 verdiept zij zich in de vertaling van geluid, waaronder het werk van hedendaagse componisten, voor een slechthorend, doof en horend publiek. In haar installaties op bijzondere locaties komen die kwaliteiten samen, ze zijn bedoeld als ontmoetingsplekken waarbij Hollander vragen stelt hoe vorm en structuur toeschouwers in staat stellen om hun omgeving mede te vorm te geven. Haar projecten zijn een poging om complexe zintuiglijke belevingen te belichamen, als een alternatieve vorm van kennis en beleving van de wereld om ons heen.
Adi Hollander is initiatiefnemer van The OtherAbilities en was in 2003 medeoprichter van kunstenaarscollectief Public Space With a Roof. Zij behaalde een Bachelor Sculptuur aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam en een Master of Science in Kunst, Cultuur en Technologie aan  MIT in de Verenigde Staten.

Envisioning Free Space Conference x Amsterdam Alternative - Collectief eigendom

Vrijdag 19 januari organiseert Amsterdam Alternative (in OT301) als onderdeel van de Envisioning Free Space Conference een avond over vrijplaatsen in collectief eigendom. Het programma is ontstaan n.a.v. de door AA gemaakte webdocu over collectief eigendom. Van 19:30-22:30 uur: een film screening, live muziek, 3 presentaties en 2 publieke discussies. Na afloop van de presentatie/discussie gaan we verder met een feestje tot 03:00 uur.

Entree voor het vroege programma is gratis. Voor het feestje is een entree van €6 (voorverkoop) en €7 aan de deur.

A conversation on autonomous buildings, past and present

In 1993, a group of people squatted a former school building on the Derde Kostverlorenkade in Amsterdam and named it Kostgewonnen. They opened the doors for community facilities, a chess-club, a kindergarten and crafts-workshops. For the neighborhood, by the neighborhood. Through their efforts, Kostgewonnen still persists as a legalized building owned by its own community. Thirty years after the squat, the world both inside and outside of its walls has changed. It is time to celebrate this anniversary and reflect on Kostgewonnen’s activist legacy, past and present.

The panel-conversation Without Landlords reflects on the social position, responsibilities and possibilities that exist within autonomous buildings. What have they come to mean in the context of a housing-crises and squatting ban? How can they adapt to a changing world? How is community maintained whilst allowing it to evolve? How does a squatting-past influence the present and future of a community? Without Landlords is about buildings and their communities as living archives. Where do we go from here?

SALWA's Internet Café

SALWA's Internet Café neemt in juli 2023 W139 over om nieuw werk van vier kunstenaars te presenteren en een reeks screenings, performances, discussies en site-specific installaties te organiseren die het snijvlak van gemeenschap, migratie en internet verkennen.

De afgelopen drie maanden heeft SALWA Foundation haar eerste residentie-programma georganiseerd, waarbij vier kunstenaars zijn uitgenodigd om de internetinfrastructuur in relatie tot migratie te onderzoeken. De kunstenaars in residentie—Chen Yu Wang, Geo Barcan, Hala Alsadi en Sixin Zang—zullen de resultaten van hun residenties delen in een tentoonstelling bij W139 van 7 juli t/m 30 juli 2023. De tentoonstelling verkent thema's als nostalgie, herinneringen, lokale internetinfrastructuren, digitale migratie, online genderrollen en pop-visuele en sonische talen die eind jaren negentig en begin jaren 2000 ontstonden.

CROSS-POLLINATIONS: Art and the Petunia Collection

Did you know that the University of Amsterdam houses the largest collection of petunia genotypes in the world? The research on plant biology and genetics carried out in the greenhouses of Science Park has the potential to change our daily lives in myriad ways: from plant-based milk and meat production to vaccines and human genetic studies. In a joint collaborative effort, the faculties of the Humanities and Natural Sciences present CROSS-POLLINATIONS, a digital heritage project encompassing both an online platform as well as a physical exhibition at VOX-POP. What is our connection to plant life? And how do we archive a collection of living, breathing and blossoming plants?

The exhibition 'CROSS-POLLINATIONS: Art and the Petunia Collection' is accompanied by an extensive public programme, including panel talks, a lecture series, guided tours, botanical drawing workshops and more. The programme further explores the richness of the University of Amsterdam’s scientific research on flowers and plants, from a variety of perspectives – artistic, historical, cultural and scientific. All events are free of charge and open to the public.
